Frequently asked questions.
what is the difference between therapy and coaching?
Many therapists are branching out into coaching services. Therapists assess, diagnose, and treat mental illness. As such, therapists often focus their work on identifying problem areas and reducing distress and/or symptoms.
Coaches motivate and encourage people to achieve specific goals. Because coaching does not involve identifying and reducing mental health symptoms, coaches often describe their work as being more goal oriented in nature.
Of course, there is overlap—many therapists focus attention on client strengths and resources, and many coaches aim to reduce and resolve the problems that stand in the way of clients achieving their goals.
The state of Colorado regulates and oversees the licensing process for therapists. In addition to the training, supervision and exams, clinical licensure requires a graduate degree. In my case, I am a licensed clinical social worker and licensed addiction counselor in the state of Colorado who practices clinically and ALSO provides coaching services when requested and appropriate.
how long are therapy or coaching sessions?
Therapy sessions are typically 45-50 minutes, while intakes or couple and family sessions may run longer per session, sometimes up to 85 minutes . Clients typically meet on a weekly or bi weekly basis depending on the client’s needs. Length of time while in therapy will depend on the individual client’s circumstance. The therapist and client will determine that together.
how do you work with other professionals?
In order to preserve the continuity of care for clients, I collaborate with school counselors, pediatricians, primary care physicians, psychiatrists, etc. With your written permission, I can provide treatment plans or answer questions that other professionals may have. If you need me to work with other professionals in your life, please don’t hesitate to ask.
